Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque ranked in the top 100 of 750 community foundations nationwide

The Foundation Center recently ranked the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD) in the top 100 of 750 community foundations across the nation in all three categories of its CF Insights: Benchmarking Beyond Asset Size report: Most Active Grantmakers (#63), Most Gifts per Capita (#31) and Most Activity (#68).

Established in 2003, CFGD is a newcomer to the century-old community foundation field. Northeast Iowa donors, nonprofits and businesses have shown strong support for the Foundation, creating over 680 funds and growing total assets to more than $65 million in just 13 years. The Foundation has also expanded its outreach to six affiliate foundations in the rural counties of Allamakee, Clayton, Delaware, Jackson and Jones as well as the Dyersville area.

Northeast Iowa nonprofits and the people they serve have been the beneficiaries of this phenomenal growth and generosity. Since 2003, nonprofit organizations have received more than $26 million in endowment payouts and grants, including $5.4 million last year alone.

“This top 100 ranking is a reflection of the extraordinary generosity of our region,” says Nancy Van Milligen, CFGD president/CEO. “For such a young foundation to be counted among the giants of our field is exceptional. We are grateful to our many donors and partners throughout Northeast Iowa who are investing in the future of their communities.”

CFGD’s successful community leadership work also distinguishes it from many of its peers. The Foundation acts as a convener and collaborator, bringing people and organizations together to directly address community challenges. Van Milligen jumped feet first into this approach in 2005 with ENVISION 2010, a successful community visioning process. Since then, CFGD has been working to create long-term solutions to community challenges through targeted initiatives like Project HOPE, Every Child/Every Promise, the Dubuque Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Inclusive Dubuque.
