A Place to Call Home
Legacy represents a testament to the power of community.
When Judd and Michelle Grover first visited Dyersville in 1996, they were immediately struck by the town’s beautiful public spaces, strong schools, and active faith community. Judd was there to interview for a job at the local veterinary clinic, and it was an evening with one of the veterinarians and his family that sealed the deal. Feeling the genuine warmth and hospitality of the people, the Grovers knew right then that Dyersville was exactly where they wanted to raise their family.
Over the years, Michelle and Judd’s connection to Dyersville grew stronger. Their children were born at the community hospital, attended story time at the library, participated in church activities, and learned in the schools. Each experience became part of what Michelle describes as “the fabric of our family.”
When their children became adults, the Grovers began thinking about their own future. This included ensuring their long-term well-being, providing for their family, and giving back to the community that had shaped their lives. Michelle recently retired as the Dyersville Area Community Foundation’s executive director. Her experience in that role gave her and Judd a first-hand understanding of how nonprofits keep rural communities vibrant and how endowments sustain local organizations for generations.
While working with the Community Foundation, the Grovers thought about the organizations most meaningful to their family, including churches, schools, the library, and the hospital. The Grovers ensured each would be supported through their legacy plans. Their goal was simple: to help preserve the same opportunities and sense of community that meant so much to their family.
For Michelle, the process wasn’t just productive; it was grounding. It brought peace of mind, clarity, and joy. “What better way to give back than to help ensure the community we love continues to thrive for future generations?” she says. Today, the Grovers’ legacy represents more than a planned gift. It is a testament to the power of community and to the impact one family can make when they choose to invest in the place they call home.
