Artist's Statement

Book to Build
By Ali Levasseur

As an avid library user, I am always excited when new services become available. In 2021, after the Washington Neighborhood Tool Library closed, I suggested Carnegie-Stout add tools to their inventory. Many other community members clearly felt the same, as it is now of one of the top 10 Envision 2030 ideas for Dubuque’s future. My work presents this idea through repurposed book dioramas inspired by artists like Joseph Cornell. One book focuses on Carnegie-Stout's current internal renovation plans and potential external renovation and build-out. The second highlights the current “library of things” and maker space. The third imagines a future tool library. In today’s world of fast-moving information, knowledge can be missed. I see books as containers of knowledge, and knowledge is the greatest tool. As you view these scenes, imagine the possibilities for Dubuque and the Carnegie-Stout Public Library.
