River Walk With Me
By Laura Klavitter

The Mississippi River plays a major role in supporting an abundant, environmentally and culturally significant ecosystem. It seams our country together, connecting hundreds of tributaries and pieces of land to one another. It is a continuous place of gathering and sharing of resources. This piece pays homage to a walk near this national gem, a showcase of ecological diversity that supports a biome of tucked-away treasures to be observed and preserved along its banks and islands. It encompasses tiny habitats, teeming with fungi, algae, lichen, moss and fallen trees. “River Walk with Me” is a collaboration piece, utilizing handmade ceramic fungi components created by ceramicist Courtney Diedrich. The driftwood was harvested from the Port of Dubuque, effortlessly carried by the river’s current, turning and churning, smoothing edges and weathering their stories from far away places. The moss specimens are completely dried and preserved, requiring no watering or care.
