Artist's Statement

Urban Farming and Food Security
By Gail Chavenelle

“Urban Farming and Food Security” is a sculpture featuring a man and woman representing connected Dubuque community members. Without features, hair, or clothing styles, the are inclusive of all ethnicities and eras. Sculpted from one piece of steel, this piece represents the interconnectedness of urban farming in Dubuque and the success of varied sustainable programs and education. In the future, Dubuque will maintain an accessible and resilient local food system. The sculpture is surrounded by healthy foods representing all seasons and epitomizes the initiative’s success. One figure holds a bunch of grapes aloft in a symbol of abundance. Beekeeping is showcased alongside other seasonal produce. The food is cut from within the figures, stressing how food security depends upon us. A visual nod is given to Convivium as an early urban farming and education leader, with their logo glimpsed in corn and carrot leaves.
