Planting New Seeds

A new Community Heart & Soul® project launches in Strawberry Point.

Nestled among the rolling hills of southwestern Clayton County, Iowa, Strawberry Point is a unique town at a crossroads -- literally and figuratively. It sits where Highways 3 and 13 meet, making it a well-traveled destination with great potential to capitalize upon its location next to beautiful Backbone State Park, which attracts thousands of visitors from across the region. Their famous Blue Grass Festival draws 1,500 people every year.

It also is at a critical point in its history: Residents need to make decisions about the future. As with many rural communities, it is challenged by vacant downtown storefronts, infrastructure maintenance, and providing amenities. To meet the moment, an energetic group of volunteers has come together to create a vision for Strawberry Point's future based upon what matters most to their friends and neighbors.

Looking beyond the "same 10 people" who are always involved, the Heart & Soul team will gather stories, share ideas, and put together a plan to strengthen their town. Building a hopeful, positive narrative for Strawberry Point's future will plant the seeds for new development and increased resident engagement. 

“I like the idea of bringing  everybody together and not the same old six to eight people,” says Strawberry Point Heart & Soul leader Linzy Martin. “It makes my heart sing.”
