About Us

We are a group of local veterans who have united to establish one of Ray Bubba Sorensens Freedom Rocks in Guttenberg, Iowa to recognize, honor, and thank all Clayton County veterans. Project components include: getting the rock, establishing it at the site, providing visitor access, landscaping, painting the rock, and erecting a protective roof. The end result of our project will be a 9-foot long x 6-foot high x 44-inches thick boulder painted with images by artist Ray Bubba Sorensen depicting people, places, or events that have significance in the military history of the veterans of Clayton County. The site will be landscaped with colored rock and bushes and will feature other elements including lighting, flag poles and flags, sections for memorial/honor pavers, a donor plaque, protective roof, and a 5-foot handicap-access compatible sidewalk to and around the site. Clayton County does not have a Freedom Rock. While other memorials to veterans do exist, none will be personalized like this rock with its unique artwork that will be customized not only to showcase our County, but also to include the faces of some of the Countys veterans. The Rocks site, located off the main highway through town, is well situated to attract visitors.   As of December 2020, our site is nearing completion.  The rock has been painted by artist Ray Sorensen III, the access sidewalk and hand rails from the parking area to the rock have been completed, a very attractive protective roof has been added, the flagpoles and lighting are in and most recently we laid the memorial / honor engraved pavers.  Next spring we will add the paver set sand and hope to have a dedication ceremony.

Mission

Our mission is to bring a Freedom Rock to Clayton County and establish an attractive and appropriate site to recognize, honor and thank the veterans of Clayton County for their service.

Success Story

Clayton County does not have a Freedom Rock. While other memorials to veterans do exist, none will be personalized like this rock with its unique artwork that will be customized not only to showcase our County, but also to include the faces of some of the County's veterans. The Rock's site, located off the main highway through town, is well situated to attract visitors.   We were helped by many generous donations include the boulder itself, site preparation, transporting and setting the boulder onto the site and supplies and folding for sending out 1350 donation letters.  These donations also helped with the artist fees, protective roof, flags and flagpoles and landscaping materials.  Additionally, engraved pavers were purchased for honoring veterans past and present.  It has turned out to be a very attractive site and we've been told of the large number of visitors that have already viewed the location.
