Success Story

This memorial scholarship was established in 2017 to honor and cherish the memory of Myrna J. Larkey of Maquoketa, Iowa. Myrna was a graduate of Lost Nation Community High School and had attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Following graduation, Myrna found great joy in working at a local nursing home and on the Obstetrics floor at the community hospital. On July 11, 1969 she married Robert (Bob) F. Larkey.   Bob and Myrna were proud parents of four children: Troy, Rick, Scarlet (Dietz) and Robin (Krogman).   For many years, Myrna was a homemaker raising her four children. She also co-owned and operated Maquoketa Livestock Sales with her husband. She was a dedicated member of First Lutheran Church, Fulton Community Church, and the Jackson County Public Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Myrna enjoyed volunteering her time at the Ohnward Fine Arts Center and by serving Meals On Wheels.   Myrna was known in the community for her generosity, compassion, patriotism, and dedication to her loved ones. She had a lifelong love of caring for others and spending quality time with her family and closest friends. Myrna always sought to improve the lives of those she served and was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.   During the last year of her life, Myrna experienced various health issues and spent many weeks in several healthcare facilities. Despite her circumstances, she valued the comfort, compassion, and great care she was given by all. For that reason, the Myrna J. Larkey memorial scholarship was established. Through this scholarship, Myrna's family wishes to recognize outstanding high school seniors dedicated to pursuing a career in the healthcare field and who will strive to improve the lives of those they will serve.   One $500 scholarship will be awarded annually. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the recipient's school at the start of the upcoming spring semester.   In order to qualify for Myrna J. Larkey Memorial Scholarship funds, applicants must be current high school seniors enrolled at Maquoketa Community High School and plan to attend an accredited university to pursue a degree in the healthcare field. Along with the application, applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and a copy of their high school transcript.
