About Us
In the foreword to the seminal publication , Paul Johnson (then Chief of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service) wrote A land comprised of wilderness islands at one extreme and urban islands at the other, with vast food and fiber factories in between, does not constitute a geography of hope. But private land need not be devoted to a single-purpose enterprise. With a broader understanding of land and our place within the landscape, our Nation's farms, ranches, and private forest land can and do serve the multiple functions that we and all other life depend upon. The Paul W Johnson Legacy Fund is dedicated to furthering Pauls vision for a Geography of Hope across Americas working lands and landscapes. Draft programming priorities are outlined on the success story tab, and a brochure can be found on the basic information tab (under form 990, which it is not). We welcome your contributions of ideas, energy, and money. To contribute financially, use the donate button to the right. A mailing address is provided for those wishing to send a check, and qualified charitable contributions from IRA accounts are welcome.

Programming goals of the PWJ Legacy Fund are under development. Initial priorities under consideration include: 1. A book, with elements potentially including a brief biography, a curated collection of his writings, and a discussion of Paul's ideas within the history and future of private lands conservation in America. 2. A small grants or fellowship program, open to some combination of graduate students, academics, journalists, conservation professionals, and farmers, to encourage writing and other forms of communication advancing a land ethic in public policy and across America's working landscapes. 3. An annual or biennial conference, workshop, lecture, or other gathering for sharing ideas, energy, inspiration, and fellowship. 4. Aspirational (longer term and funding-contingent) idea of creating a distributed policy think tank, dedicated to the proposition that private landowners hold responsibilities towards society, and society holds responsibilities towards landowners, and a Private Lands Conservation Act is needed to define those mutual responsibilities and to guide federal policy. The other programming activities would of course all be building blocks contributing to this effort.
