MONONA, Iowa — The Clayton County Foundation for the Future awarded $12,279 to area nonprofits on April 11 at its annual grant award celebration at Freedom Bank in Monona.

“These grants are made possible by local donors who are excited about the future of Clayton County communities,” said Emily Sadewasser, foundation coordinator. “The community foundation was created with the intention of establishing a perpetual endowment fund that would meet the needs of all of Clayton County and the 19 communities within its borders.”

The event was more than just an opportunity to recognize the work of local nonprofits. It also was a celebration of the Foundation’s 15th anniversary, which Board Chair Andrew Reimer acknowledged as he announced the grant awards.

“You can just see the passion about all these projects going on in our county,” said grant recipient Diane Malcom, commenting on the grant awards.

Clayton County Conservation Director Jenna Pollock and Motor Mill Foundation President John Nikolai received a grant for enriching the remnant oak savanna near the mill. “We’re very excited and appreciate this generous grant from the Darby family for all it’ll help us accomplish this year,” said Pollock.

A grant to the City of McGregor will help establish a pocket park on the site of a former historic building. “The City of McGregor is trying to take a real sour lemon, the tornado of 2017, and make some lemonade,” said Joan Burns, accepting the award. “We’re very grateful. Leann and Craig Watson, thank you so much. This grant makes a wonderful impact.”

Grant funding was made possible by donations to the Clayton County Foundation for the Future Endowment, the Leroy and Colleen Darby Family Endowed Donor-Advised Fund, the A.J. Spiegel Endowment Fund, the Dan Barton Family Endowment, the Watson-Rugland Family Endowment for Clayton County, Craig and LeAnn Watson, and the Dr. Russell and Juanita Loven Endowment.

Donors who give to endowments may benefit from the Endow Iowa 25% State Tax Credit in addition to federal charitable income tax deductions.
