Dyersville Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Receives $2,500 Alliant Energy Grant

The Dyersville Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is the recipient of a $2,500 grant from Alliant Energy to support Family Literacy Nights that will take place throughout the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year.

With nearly 35% of students not reading at grade level, these events will focus on bringing families together.  A meal will be provided as well as an interactive session using Scholastic materials that are created to help families work together by supporting their children in getting ready for school while developing a love for reading. Parents are the first and most important teachers in their children’s lives. Research shows that students are most successful academically and socially when their parents are involved and engaged in their learning. The message is clear: children need to talk, read, and interact with their children. These programs will provide families another opportunity to have access to free books and support from local community providers on effective parenting strategies.

The Campaign for Grade Level Reading is established to address three underlying challenges that can keep young children, especially those from low-income families, from learning to read well:

  • School readiness – too many children are entering kindergarten already behind.
  • School attendance – too many children are missing too many days of school.
  • Summer learning – too many children are losing ground academically over the summer.

The events will be open to all families in the Dyersville area and will be marketed through the local elementary schools, Kid Project and Head Start.
